Did you know that a car seat is the only baby gear item you're legally required to buy?
Did you know that a car seat is the only baby gear item you're legally required to buy? Even if you don't have a car, most hospitals won't let you take your newborn baby home until you have them securely fastened in a car seat. That's why it's an absolute registry must-have. There are four basic types of car seats you need to know about, and you can read up on all of them in our Car Seat Guide. The difference between them has to do with the size your child. Up first: Infant car seats. Designed to fit babies up to 6-9 months, they're made to be portable, so you can switch your sleeping baby in and out of the car easily. Toddler seats hold children from around 6 months of age until about 4 years or 40 lbs,. and remain rear-facing in your car until your baby is 1-year-old. Once your little one has outgrown a toddler seat, transition them to a booster seat. It's basically a mini version of a regular car seat with added safety features and a weight capacity of up to 100 lbs. Your other option? Save money and buy a convertible car seat, which can either transition from infant seat to toddler seat or toddler seat to booster seat! Browse our picks now, and then add it to your registry in a snap, with our Quick-Click Registry Checklist. see less
Yes, the Graco SnugRide 35 car seat is approved by the FAA for use on airplanes. You are able to use it with or without the car seat base. We always recommend checking with your particular airline as well to confirm their specific regulations regarding car seat usage.
Are there any functional differences between the SnugRide Platinum and other SnugRide infant models, or is color the only difference?
3 years, 11 months ago
There are three SnugRide models: SnugRide, SnugRide 32, and SnugRide 35. Functionally, they all work the same. The main differences between the three are how long you are able to use it with your infant, and the size/weight of the seat. Here are the specifics:
SnugRide: rear-facing only; for infants 5-22 lbs., less than 29 inches tall. -Size: 7.5 lbs w/o base, 24.2"H x 17.5"W x 26.7"D
SnugRide 32: rear-facing only; for infants 5-32 lbs., less than 32 inches tall. -Size: 9.7 lbs w/o base, 15.6"H 18.7"W x 30.7"D
SnugRide 35: rear-facing only; for infants 5 to 35 lbs., less than 32 inches tall. -Size: 9.7 lbs w/o base, 15.6"H 18.7"W x 30.7"D
NOTE: The SnugRide 32 and 35 have a wider footprint than the basic SnugRide, so if you plan to use it with a stroller car seat adapter or stroller frame, be sure to confirm they are compatible with eachother.
Space is definitely a concern when choosing a car seat because you want one that will fit properly in your car without hindering the safety and functionality of the seat. The only true way to know what will work in your car is to head to a store and test it out. Your primary consideration should be safety ratings, and from there, what works best in your car.
Many of our customers opt for the Maxi Cosi Mico Infant car seat because of its smaller base (14"h x 17"w x 25"d compared to the Graco SnugRide's 22"h x 17.25"w x 26"d). The Mico works from birth to 22lbs: http://www.giggle.com/p/20657/c/557....
You may want to consider an infant/toddler convertible carseat. These have a smaller footprint than infant car seats, and an adjustable recline when rear-facing. Our recommendation would be to check out the Britax Boulevard CS, which works from birth to 65lbs: http://www.giggle.com/p/28328/c/557....
Yes, the Graco Snugride is compatible with the 2009 model Bugaboo Bee. More importantly, you need to make sure that you are using the 2009 model car seat adapter. The 2010 adapter is not compatible with the older model stroller. Thanks for your question!
This may sound like a stupid question, but I'm new to all of this! Do we need a base for every car we have or can we switch it out? How difficult is it to switch out? Obviously we're going to be using one car more than the other, but I was just wondering if to get a second.
Not a stupid question at all...and congratulations on being a new parent! You definitely do not need to have a base in every car, but having an extra base in your second car does make going back an forth easy and quick, especially if you are in a hurry with a crying baby on hand! As with any infant car seat base, installation is pretty easy, so should you decide to just go with one base to switch back and forth, you should have no problem.
Can this car seat be used in a taxi without its seat base, like the Graco SnugRide?
Yes, you are able to use the car seat without the base during short trips. The Chicco KeyFit 30 has seatbelt hooks exposed on either side of the car seat. Instructions for this type of use are included in the product manual. Or, give us a call at Customer Service (1.800.495.8577) and we will get you any info you need!
1- I am confused about the bases that this car seat is compatible with. Is it compatible with the base for the basic model of graco snugride?
2- Is the all-weather boot provide sufficient warmth from winter months compared to the original bundle me by JJ Cole?
The SnugRide Platinum is compatible with any basic SnugRide base. It will not work with a SnugRide 35 base, as the Platinum has a smaller footprint. The premium boot is absolutely enough to keep an infant warm in the wintertime!
I have read that the Britax is the worst culprit of off-gasing toxic fumes from its materials. And then I have read that Orbit is the best in this category. What about the Maxi Cosi?!? I am trying to find the best convertible car seat for my soon to be one-year-old. I also didn't see much information on the safety ratings for this car seat. I appreciate your thoughts!
giggle, and all of our partners, are working hard to not only meet but exceed all current, changing and pending requirements for the safest, healthiest - and whenever possible - most eco-friendly standards. Across the board, our giggle car seat manufacturer picks must meet the highest safety standards available. Whenever possible, we also work hard to select the products that are also using the most environmentally friendly finishes and dyes available while still meeting all applicable governmental safety regulations.
In addition to being a best-of-class manufacturer for safety, Britax is compliant with all applicable federal and state standards regarding the reduction or elimination of certain chemicals or elements. Moreover, all Britax suppliers were required to confirm that their components are free of any levels of Phthalates and PVC as of January 1st of 2008. Furthermore, Britax has worked with its’ suppliers to eliminate halogenated flame retardants, those containing bromine and chlorine, in favor of non-halogenated flame retardants, effective as of September 1st, 2009. The current compliance standards that Britax mandates for these chemicals are monitored both by independent laboratory as well as through internal Britax testing where practical. In addition, testing has been completed and Britax suppliers have committed to using BPA-free polycarbonate plastics used in all Britax products since the end of 2008. We consider Britax among the leaders in not only offering the safest convertible car seats but having quickly and effectively responded to improving standards for their parts vis a vis our children's health and the environment. We encourage you to consider Britax among your top choices.
You are correct that Orbit is also a leader in this category, and one of the reasons that we have been so excited to add them to our giggle offering. They make smart travel systems.
Maxi Cosi has long been the leading car seat solution throughout Europe. They meet and exceed all US and European standards, as well as a growing list of global standards. Like Britax, as a global manufacturer of the highest rated seats, they also meet and exceed all current materials standards. The reason you do not see as many ratings on the Maxi Cosi is simply because it hasn't been in the US as long as the car seats it competes with here. Most of those reviews/ratings, like Consumer Reports, are done on an annual basis.
For these reasons and more, giggle remains focused on not just meeting and exceeding the highest standards available in all of our product choices but also complete transparency with our consumers both through questions & answers like this and in our consumer ratings.
Will I love this car seat even though I have no other Orbit items?!? I like the look of it, the mocha color, and that it is eco-friendly in way of not leaching harmful chemicals, and a good safety rating. I'm torn between this and the Britax.
I think you absolutely will love the Orbit Baby Toddler Car Seat, even if you are not using the entire system. We love it for the same reasons you do: healthy materials, easy to use, soft fabric, great colors, and it meets all required safety standards! One advantage the Orbit Baby seat has over the Britax car seats is the ability to swivel if you are using it in conjunction with the car seat base. This allows you to load the seat and child at the most convenient angle for you.
Keep in mind, the Britax Boulevard has a weight maximum of 65 lbs, which is 15 lbs more than the Orbit, so you'd be able to use it longer before transitioning to a booster seat. Also, the Boulevard can be used from birth, where the Orbit has a 15 lb weight minimum.
If you are looking for just a 2nd stage seat, the Orbit Toddler Seat is still a great option, but also look at the Britax Frontier 85. It has a minimum of 25 lbs, and holds up to 85 lbs in harnessed mode, and up to 120 lbs in booster mode.
