BEST BASICS: These are the tried-and-true necessities that every new parent needs, such as burp cloths and baby bottles, plus some of those things that just make parenting a little simpler. Most of them are considered must-haves, and the rest will make your life so much easier they'll be a no-brainer. In this category, we look for convenience and functionality above all else.BEST BASICS: everyday baby essentials
HEALTHY: Every parent's number-one goal is a healthy baby, and babies' developing systems are a lot more sensitive than adults. That's why we work hard to find products that won't introduce any more toxins than necessary into your home. Sometimes that means organic products that avoid pesticides and chemicals, but it also includes things like nontoxic cleaning products made from plant-based ingredients, or plastics without toxins likes BPA or phthalates.HEALTHY: made with safe or organic materials
RESPONSIBLE: What's good for the world is good for our children. We put a special emphasis on environmentally friendly, "green" products that are made with nontoxic, recycled and sustainable materials. We also love products that help the communities where they're made, or that go the extra mile to support charitable causes. Plus, we love "local"!RESPONSIBLE: eco-friendly or locally produced

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 3 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great mattress Eco conscious, this mattress is good looking, firm and baby sleeps comfortable. June 30, 2009
Rated 3 out of 5 by It's too long! I bought the Cube 2.0 crib. When the mattress is placed inside, it's too long so I can't use my bumper. The width is okay. I know that the mattress is too long because my fitted sheet (organic one from Giggle) as well as the waterproof pad (also from Giggle) is a tight fit around the mattress. I do like that it's light and still firm. I am hoping it will last until my daughter becomes a toddler. Just make sure when you purchase the mattress that it will fit both the crib, with or without the bumper as the fitted sheet you purchased. November 7, 2009
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great mattress Lightweight which makes it easy to change the sheets, especially in the middle of the night! A bit pricey, but we decided to splurge on this, and feel it is money well spent. May 30, 2009

Dual firmness?

Q:
Is one side of this mattress firmer than the other and can the mattress be flipped? Is the mattress firm enough for a newborn? If it does not have dual firmness, is it recommended that I switch to a different mattress after a certain period of time?

A:
When it comes to creating a safe, healthy sleep envirnment, it is recommended that a firm mattress be used for an infant, and that the infant’s sleeping area is both well ventilated, and temperature regulated. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standards regulate crib mattress minimum and maximum width, length, and thickness, as well as flammability, but not mattress firmness.

We like to abide by a firmness “rule of thumb” test: Press on the mattress in the center and at the edges -- it should snap back readily and should not conform to the shape of your hand. While firmness is one consideration when selecting a mattress, the overall health effects that the mattress’s raw materials have on the infant should be considered, as well. While this mattress is not dual-sides, the natural latex coated coir used in NaturalMat's CocoMat makes an extremely firm and supportive mattress with good "snap back" while providing superb ventilation and insulation -- key safety features for any mattress -- and is the only mattress a family will need to invest in for their newborn through infant ages during the crib stage.

We recommend using the best practices for an infant's sleeping environment set forth by First Candle (formerly known as the SIDS Alliance), and that you consult your family's medical expert for specific recommendations for your family.

NaturalMat's CocoMat passes all fire regulations without the use of chemical or unnatural treatments in any part of the mattress. A:
Coco Mats are handmade in England. The lambs wool is sustainably and exclusively sourced from farms in Devon and Dorset, both of which are certified by the UK Soil Association. This certification ensures that their wool sourcing practices are humane and responsible. As with every product we source at giggle, we work hard to meet the highest standards available.

Q:
is that a problem that the natural mat mattress is slightly smaller in width than other mattresses? i understand it's 27 and 1/4. won't there be space on either size in cribs that are supposed to fit 28 width mattresses? thanks for your help

A:
What a good question! To start, the Cocomat meets the CPSC standard requiring crib mattresses to be at least 27.25 inches by 51.75 inches.

For determining a safe fit within a standard full-size crib, the rule of thumb is no more than 2 adult fingers should be able to fit between the crib and mattress. Check out the width of two of your fingers; more than 3/4 of an inch, right? So while the wonderfully organic Cocomat is slightly smaller than the other crib mattresses that we carry, it is absolutely safe to use is any standard size crib!
