Q:
Does this mattress need the extra mattress protector ($40) that you sell for the Coco Mat or is the mattress protector that it comes with waterproof, etc?Answers
A:
Alma Papa's CocoMat Mattress is covered in organic cotton that is not waterproof. To protect your investment, and contain messes, giggle recommends adding the Alma Papa Mattress Protector -- it's 100% organic cotton flannel lined with a fully cured thin polyurethane ("rubber") elastomer layer which is trademarked under the name “hydroguard".Products from my answer

Q:
I read that this mattress is excellent for small babies. Are there any concerns about it lasting and being a good quality mattress as the baby grows and lasting for the duration that the baby would use the crib (~ 2 years)?Answers
A:
When it comes to creating a safe, healthy sleep environment, parents should choose a firm mattress for their crib that will grow with their baby, and Bloom’s Alma Papa NaturalMat Cocomat Mattress passes the test!NaturalMat mattresses provide long lasting superior support – CocoMat’s natural latex coated coir makes a durable, naturally sprung mattress, and provides a superior and longer lasting level of support than most synthetic foam or metal spring. Plus, the lambswool insulator is a very resilient fiber providing thermal insulation and superb ventilation.
You can rest assured that CocoMat is the only mattress a family will need to invest in for their newborn through toddler ages-and-stages!

Q:
How firm is this mattress? Does the mattress come with any recommendations from the SIDS institute or any other medical instutitions based on its firmness? Thanks!Answers
A:
When it comes to reducing the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), it is recommended that a firm mattress be used for an infant, and that the infant’s sleeping area is both well ventilated, and temperature regulated. CPSC standards regulate crib mattress minimum and maximum width, length, and thickness, as well as flammability. Currently, federal standards do not regulate mattress firmness, and we like to abide by a firmness “rule of thumb” test: Press on the mattress in the center and at the edges -- it should snap back readily and should not conform to the shape of your hand. While firmness is one consideration when selecting a mattress, the overall health effects that the mattress’s raw materials have on the infant should be considered, as well. The natural latex coated coir used in the Alma Papa Coco Mat makes an extremely firm and supportive mattress with good "snap back" while providing superb ventilation and insulation -- key safety features for any mattress. As the specific cause(s) of SIDS is undetermined, we recommend using the best practices for an infant's sleeping environment set forth by First Candle (formerly known as the SIDS Alliance), and that you consult your family's medical expert for specific recommendations for your family.1 of 1
