Rated 5 out of 5 by Our best baby purchase! Many warned us not to buy this. "Too expensive." "You'll never use it." "They'll outgrow it so fast." "It isn't worth it." However, the heart wants what the heart wants. We loved the design. The function ended up proving them all wrong. This item of furniture was essential for our child's first six months. True, we didn't always use it during the night. It did allow me to shower every morning (amazing baby not included). We have wall-to-wall carpeting so I would just slide it into the bathroom and slide it out when I was done. Also, slid it into the living room/dining room/office and put the baby down in there to be close to us. It comes with two sheets so one is always available if the other is in the wash. The cushion comes off so you can use that part separately. May not be for everyone but was a must have for us. Also, amazing to see your baby grow by how much space they take up inside. June 2, 2013

Hello, I see that this product is made with soy-based foam. Can you tell me why this wasn't given the Giggle "healthy" rating? Also, does this product contain VOCs or flame retardants?

The "Healthy" criteria box isn't checked for Monte's Ninna Nanna Bassinet because it hasn't been measured by a 3rd party (ie. GreenGuard) for health benefits. However, Monte's commitment to minimizing the negative impact we have on the environment means a healthier, environmentally responsible product. Take a look at their sustainable materials:

--Monte's Foam: It's locally manufactured from natural seed-based oils such as soybean, significantly decreasing the dependence on fossil fuels like petroleum and ultimately lessening greenhouse gas emissions. The low emission (low VOC) foam contributes to a safe and clean indoor air quality -- it's halogen free and free of mercury, lead and other heavy metals; and is also free of CFC, PBDE and TDCPP (Tris), meeting all CAL 117 flammability requirements without the addition of chemical flame retardants. For additional information on Monte's foam please visit (www.certipur.us) and BioH (www.bioh.com).

--Monte's Wood: It meets the requirements of the LEED Rating System for wood adhesives (no urea formaldehyde added), and the glue used in frame construction is water-based and biodegradable. Further, the wood is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) meaning forestry companies are independently audited to meet the FSC's strict forest management standards.

--Monte's Microfiber Textiles and Threads: These are made according to Oeko-Tex® Standard 100, meeting globally uniform and scientifically-based test criteria (textile and human ecologically relevant). This standard ensures that no hazardous chemicals are used in the manufacturing of the microfibers and threads. (www.oeko-tex.com).

A:
Monte’s Ninna Nanna Bassinet is ASTM safety-certified as a complete “kit” – the two included 100% cotton sheets with elasticized surrounds are specially designed to fit the included mattress.

The bassinet’s components are made expressly for Ninna Nanna’s unique shape and size to ensure that the bedding is a snug fit, and all work in concert to provide the safest sleep environment. Both giggle and Monte encourage parents to use all of Ninna Nanna’s included components, and make minimal “edits”, adding only a baby in a sleepsack!

Monte’s Ninna Nanna Bassinet is ASTM safety-certified as a complete “kit” – the bassinet’s shallow depth promotes optimal ventilation around the infant, and soy-based firm, foam sides are covered in breathable Oeko-Tex certified microsuede. The firm soy-based foam mattress (an oval measuring approximately 18”W x 29”L x 1”D) is supportive for infants up to 18lbs, and the two included 100% cotton sheets with elasticized surrounds are specially designed to fit the included mattress.

For a bassinet solution with an organic mattress option, consider Bloom's Alma Mini paired with Alma Mini's CocoMat Organic Mattress -- it's a folding mini-crib that lasts until age 1 with the option of an organic crib mattress that's made to fit the Alma Mini Crib. It's comfortable and healthy, and provides excellent support with all-natural materials.

Q:
With all of the hoopla going on about bumpers being unsafe, what is the stance on the safety of a bassinet such as the Ninna Nanna which seems to have "cushy" sides?

Thanks!

A:
Whether a baby goes straight into a crib or spends a few months in a bassinet, cradle or co-sleeper is up to the parent. A smaller bed for baby's first months, bassinets are a “want” rather than a “need,” and are available in a range of sizes, shapes, and designs. They can be a great convenience to use next to a parent’s bed, in a second home, for families who frequently travel for the first 3-9 months, or for families who want room-to-room portability. Both a firm mattress and plenty of airflow around the baby are thought to reduce the risk of SIDS, and the American Academy of Pediatrics and First Candle/SIDS Alliance recommend, among several other sleep safety tips, to:

1. Keep soft objects out of the crib.
2. Use a firm sleep surface.
3. Use a sleeper or sleep clothing as an alternative to blankets.

The ASTM safety-certified, and “eco”-pick, Monte Ninna Nanna Bassinet has FIRM (not cushy or soft!) soy-based foam sides covered in breathable Oeko-Tex certified microsuede that are less than 9” high. The depth of this bassinet is shallower than the depth of most alternative sleeping environments, promoting optimal breathability and airflow around the infant. The soy-based foam mattress is firm and supportive for infants up to 18lbs, and is rated to support up to 30 lbs., and the two included 100% cotton sheets with elasticized surrounds are designed expressly for Ninna Nanna’s mattress ensuring that the bedding is a tight fit. In step with the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics and First Candle/SIDS Alliance, we at giggle do strongly encourage the use of infant sleep sacks rather than blankets whenever possible.
